Addis Ababa: Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, a key mediator of the Pretoria peace agreement that ended the two-year conflict between the Tigray People\u2019s Liberation Front (TPLF) and Ethiopia\u2019s federal government, has reportedly resumed mediation efforts as tensions between the two sides escalate.<\/p>\n
Diplomatic sources told Horn Frequency that Obasanjo has been engaged in mediation efforts over the past two weeks, seeking to de-escalate growing tensions in Tigray amid reports of renewed security incidents and alleged drone strikes in the region.<\/p>\n
The initiative is aimed at preserving the Pretoria peace agreement, which ended active hostilities in November 2022, and addressing disputes surrounding its implementation.<\/p>\n
According to sources, Obasanjo has been holding consultations with members of the diplomatic community in Addis Ababa, including representatives of the European Union and embassies that played an active role during the Pretoria negotiations.<\/p>\n
The renewed engagement comes weeks after the African Union appointed Obasanjo to support its efforts to promote peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, relations between the TPLF and the federal government have deteriorated in recent weeks. Witnesses and regional officials have alleged that multiple drone strikes were carried out in parts of Tigray, particularly in the northern areas of the region.
