Ethiopia has launched construction of a $12.5 billion international airport in Bishoftu, approximately 50 kilometers southeast of Addis Ababa, the capital.
The Bishoftu International Airport, which is scheduled for completion by 2030, is expected to become Africa’s largest airport upon completion.
Ethiopian Airlines, marking its 80th year of operation, announced that it has invested more than $600 million in the project’s groundbreaking phase. The airline, Africa’s leading carrier, will cover 30 percent of the total construction cost, while the remaining 70 percent will be financed through loans from international creditors, including the African Development Bank.
Once completed, the airport is projected to serve 110 million passengers annually and will have capacity to accommodate up to 270 aircraft simultaneously.
