Tshisekedi’s Constitutional Reform Plan Sparks Protests in DR Congo

Addis Ababa: Demonstrations have erupted in several cities across the Democratic Republic of Congo following the government’s proposal to amend the constitution, a move that has raised concerns that President Felix Tshisekedi could seek a third term.

Protests were reported in Kinshasa, Lubumbashi and Uvira. In Lubumbashi and Uvira, demonstrators took to the streets despite restrictions imposed by local authorities, according to Reuters.

In Kinshasa, security forces used tear gas to disperse protesters, while clashes were also reported between demonstrators and government supporters, who threw stones at each other, Reuters reported.

The proposed constitutional reform has become a major political issue in the country. The current constitution limits the president to two five year terms. Opponents of the proposed changes fear that amendments could create a pathway for Tshisekedi to remain in office beyond the existing two term limit.

Tshisekedi’s supporters, meanwhile, have backed the proposed reforms and expressed support for his continued leadership.

The protests come as the government prepares for a planned national dialogue aimed at addressing the country’s longstanding political and security challenges. The proposed talks are expected to bring together political and other national actors, although rebel groups controlling territory in parts of eastern Congo are expected to be excluded.

The constitutional debate is unfolding alongside continued instability in eastern Congo, where armed groups remain in control of parts of the region.
