Addis Ababa: South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit has removed Abednego Akok as chairperson of the National Elections Commission as the country prepares for general elections scheduled for Dec. 22, 2026.
No official reason was given for Akok’s removal.
Following his dismissal, Kiir appointed Gabriel Bol Deng Majok, who previously served as secretary general of the National Elections Commission, as the commission’s new chairperson.
The decision has drawn criticism and raised concerns among the people and political observers, with some questioning the credibility and independence of the upcoming election.
According to multiple reports, election materials are being distributed to various states ahead of the vote as preparations continue.
South Sudan has not held a national election since gaining independence in 2011. The country has faced prolonged political instability and conflict, and its national elections have been postponed five times since 2015.
The latest leadership change at the election commission comes less than four months before the scheduled vote, adding to uncertainty surrounding the country’s electoral preparations.
