Addis Ababa: Following the rapid advance of the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) toward Tigray’s regional capital, Mekelle, various scenarios are emerging, including the possibility that the Tigray Peace and Change Council could take charge of the region if the government unseats the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), according to the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED).
In its latest webinar, ACLED outlined several scenarios, including the possibility of Getachew Reda’s Tigray Peace and Change Council taking the lead in Tigray.
ACLED also said that if the government fails to push the TPLF out of Mekelle, the conflict could become protracted, potentially putting the future of the federal government at stake.
Jalale Getachew Biru, ACLED’s senior analyst for the Horn of Africa with a special focus on Ethiopia, said government forces are advancing toward Tigray as the situation in the region deteriorates. She also referred to the arrest of Tadesse Worede, the former head of the regional administration.
According to various accounts and military sources, government forces are pushing back TPLF forces and rapidly advancing toward the regional capital.
Following the formation of an alliance among seven armed groups in the country, including the TPLF, the escalation of fighting in northern, northeastern and northwestern Ethiopia has raised concerns.
