Trump Review Sparks Somaliland Independence Optimism

[rstr_selector]

Somaliland politicians and diplomats are expressing renewed optimism that U.S. President Donald Trump may formally recognize Somaliland’s independence after decades of appeals for self-determination and separation from Somalia.

Sources told Horn Frequency that encouraging signals have emerged from the White House, with President Trump reportedly reviewing the matter closely.

In making their case, Somaliland officials are drawing on historical precedents set by previous U.S. administrations. They point to President Barack Obama’s recognition of South Sudan’s independence and President George W. Bush’s recognition of Kosovo as examples of Washington backing similar independence movements.

Relations between Hargeisa and Mogadishu have sharply deteriorated since March 2025. In response to the tensions, Mogadishu has reportedly offered the United States exclusive access to the ports of Bossaso and Berbera. It is also recalled that Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud wrote to President Trump, offering key military airbases and strategic seaports across the country.

These moves have intensified the standoff between Mogadishu and Hargeisa, escalating the dispute over Somaliland’s political future.
