The U.S. Embassy in Kenya has warned of a possible terror attack by Al-Shabaab, the East African wing of al-Qaeda, with Nairobi among the likely targets.

In a security alert issued two days ago, the embassy said potential targets include hotels, police stations, markets, schools, religious institutions, and other locations frequently visited by tourists. The advisory noted that an attack could occur “at any time,” though it may coincide with symbolic dates such as September 11, September 21 the anniversary of the 2013 Westgate Mall attack and October 7, marking the anniversary of the Hamas assault on Israel.

The embassy urged U.S. citizens to remain vigilant, avoid large crowds and demonstrations, and closely monitor local media for updates.

In response, Kenyan security agencies have tightened security measures in Nairobi. Security analysts told The Horn Frequency that Al-Shabaab could attempt to exploit public resentment against President William Ruto’s government, which has faced a wave of youth-led protests over corruption, unemployment, and poor governance.
