Addis Ababa: The United Kingdom has donated aviation security equipment to Ethiopia, handing the technology over to the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) in a move aimed at strengthening aviation security and cross-border crime prevention.
During the handover ceremony, British Ambassador to Ethiopia Darren Welch highlighted the security cooperation between the two countries and commended ongoing collaboration in addressing transnational threats.
Welch praised NISS for its efforts to combat organized crime and other illicit activities that exploit international travel routes and pose risks to public safety.
According to officials, the equipment will be deployed in Ethiopia as the first such aviation security system of its kind to be introduced in Africa.
Speaking at the ceremony, NISS Deputy Director-General Sisay Tola said the donation reflects the growing partnership between Ethiopia and the United Kingdom in promoting security and global connectivity.
“The support demonstrates the strengthening cooperation between our two countries and our shared commitment to safety and secure international connectivity,” Sisay said.
He noted that aviation security threats have become increasingly complex and unpredictable, requiring continuous investment in prevention and risk mitigation.
Sisay added that maintaining the position of Ethiopian Airlines as one of Africa’s leading carriers requires anticipating emerging security threats and taking proactive measures to address them.
