Addis Ababa: The Amhara Fano National Movement (AFNM) has rejected allegations that it has formed alliances with domestic or foreign actors working against Ethiopia’s current government, describing the claims as baseless.
In a statement, AFNM Chairperson Zemene Kassie said any political or military partnerships pursued by the movement would be transparent and in the interest of the Amhara people, rather than the result of “shady or backdoor agreements.”
Zemene also said the Fano movement had reached its current position without assistance from any external group.
The statement accused the federal government of lacking the moral authority to speak about Ethiopia’s sovereignty, describing the administration as “genocidal.”
The remarks come amid growing speculation among supporters and some fighters in parts of the Amhara region over alleged ties between Fano factions and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), claims that have circulated widely in recent weeks.
The statement comes as fighting in the Amhara region continues to intensify, with both Fano fighters and federal forces reportedly suffering casualties.
In recent days, an Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) colonel was reportedly killed in Dega Damot in West Gojjam Zone. Days earlier, Amare Ashenafi, a Fano commander in the Dembia area of North Gondar Zone, was also reported killed.
