South Africa urges immigrants not to fear anti-immigration protest

Edmonton: The South Africa government has urged immigrants not to fear a planned June 30 protest organised by anti-immigration activists calling for undocumented foreigners to leave the country.

The demonstration is being organised by the March and March movement, whose leaders have campaigned against illegal immigration in South Africa.

During a media briefing, South African authorities said peaceful protest is protected under the constitution, but warned that any acts of violence, vandalism or attacks targeting immigrants would face legal consequences.

However, immigrants living in South Africa told The Horn Frequency that they remain fearful despite the government’s assurances. Residents alleged that police have previously tolerated or assisted anti-immigration groups during intimidation campaigns and attacks targeting foreign nationals. They also expressed concern that the June 30 demonstrations could escalate similarly.

According to multiple sources, police operations involving door-to-door inspections and random vehicle checks for immigration documents have intensified in major cities, including Durban and Johannesburg.

The developments come amid rising tensions surrounding immigration and unemployment in South Africa, where foreign nationals have increasingly reported harassment and security concerns.
