Addis Ababa: Ethiopian forces have shot down a drone that entered Ethiopian airspace in Bamado locality, Homosha Woreda, in Assosa Zone of the Benishangul-Gumuz region, according to local witnesses.
Witnesses told Horn Frequency that they could not identify the model of the drone but said it had relatively small wings and appeared to be armed. They said ammunition debris was found at the site after the drone was brought down.
Local residents said they believed the drone was targeting Rapid Support Forces (RSF) fighters who are reportedly operating inside Ethiopian territory. Witnesses said they saw the drone falling and burning.
The incident comes shortly after the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) announced that it had shot down a drone that it said was flying from the Ethiopian side of the border. The SAF has not publicly provided further details about the drone or its alleged origin.
Horn Frequency could not independently verify whether the two incidents were connected, nor could it independently establish the origin or intended target of the drone downed in Ethiopia.
The developments come amid longstanding accusations by Sudan’s army that Ethiopia is supporting the RSF in Sudan’s ongoing war. The SAF has repeatedly accused Ethiopia of allowing drones originating from its territory to carry out attacks inside Sudan.
Ethiopia has denied allegations of involvement in the Sudan conflict, while international media reports and investigations have raised questions about alleged Ethiopian support for the RSF and the reported presence of an RSF training facility inside Ethiopia.
