Addis Ababa: African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has condemned a fatal attack that killed two Ethiopian peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and injured seven others in Jonglei State.
Youssouf paid tribute to the Ethiopian soldiers who were killed and expressed solidarity with those injured. He called on South Sudanese authorities to conduct an immediate investigation and prosecute those responsible for the attack.
The AU Commission chairperson also extended his condolences to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and to the families, colleagues and friends of the victims.
On Aug. 25, unidentified attackers targeted a joint UNMISS patrol as the convoy was traveling from Bor toward Pajut. Two Ethiopian peacekeepers were killed in the attack, while three other Ethiopian soldiers, two UN civilian staff members and two South Sudanese police officers sustained injuries.
The South Sudanese government pledged to conduct a thorough investigation and hold those responsible accountable. It also reaffirmed its commitment to working with UNMISS to strengthen security and protect personnel serving with the mission.
