Addis Ababa – Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused Egypt of actively campaigning to destabilize the Horn of Africa, issuing a strongly worded statement that labeled Cairo a persistent troublemaker instead of choosing avenues for peaceful engagement.
In its latest communiqué, the ministry said Egypt continues to invoke colonial-era treaties to assert what it calls “historical rights” over the Nile, claims Addis Ababa disputes. According to the statement, Egypt’s long-standing attempts to fuel tensions around the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) have become “more evident than ever,” citing Cairo’s repeated rejection of dialogue over the Nile, to which Ethiopia contributes an estimated 86 percent of the water flow.
The ministry further denounced what it described as Egypt’s “irresponsible” strategy toward Ethiopia. It added that cooperation and a commitment to shared development would better serve both countries and provide a constructive path forward.
